Quick Start

Your CD should arrive in the mail shortly. Simply insert it into a normally-configured Windows PC and the software should be automatically installed to your connected portable device.
If you run into problems, please see the more complete instructions for your device, below.

Note: please also see the installation sheet that ships with the CDs for more details and warnings.

Included Files

Each CD will come with an autorun.inf file, and either a batch (.bat) file or executable (.exe) which is invoked by the autorun mechanism to install the software. Please note that your portable device must be connected to your PC, either by USB, serial, infrared (IR) or Bluetooth, or some other method, in order for the software installation to be completed in one step.

If that is not possible, or if your primary computer is something other than later releases of Windows, you may need to refer to your owner's manuals in order to copy necessary files to your device.

Version for Desktop PC

If you have the now-obsolete 2004-2005 edition of PCDecisions, we recommend running its uninstall program before proceeding with the 2008-2009 Decisions installation, because the shortcuts look exactly the same. Otherwise, there is no conflict if you wish to keep both versions, but you may wish to rename the shortcut of the old one to "PCDecisions 2004-2005".

If you are already running the 2006-2007 edition, you will need to shut down the server. Clicking this link from the same device that is running the program should suffice: http://127.0.0.1/QUIT20071213, or, from the program, do a Search for any unique term containing QUIT in capital letters. In theory, the word QUIT by itself should suffice, but due to aggressive caching being used by some browsers, particularly on the Pocket PC, you must defeat the cache by using a different term each time you shut down the server. "QUIT" followed by today's date should work fine.

The 2008-2009 version of PCDecisions runs as a mini-webserver on your machine, and was intended for Windows workstations, not servers. If you are running Microsoft's webserver, IIS, you will need to shut it down in order to run PCDecisions. Instructions for that are on our support page.

Loading the CD on most Windows systems will automatically run the installer; otherwise, locate your CD drive in My Computer, double-click to open it and double-click again on pcdinst.exe. We recommend following all the defaults (path, options) supplied with the installer for best results. The program takes about a minute to initialize after installation and after each time you log in to Windows. If you click the PCDecisions icon before initialization is complete, you will get a "Page not found" or similar error.
